Mountains of Nordland

The mountains in the northern part of Norway have a peculiar look to them. Even though they’re just above sea level, they’re mostly bare except for thin laces of moss and low-laying vegetation. They look like wrinkled and tormented faces of old men.

No wonder trolls look the way they do: they’re made to look like the mountains. Also, these mountains are otherworldly: cliffs soar straight up to the skies from the seas. Glaciers sliced and sculptured these big rock to give them grotesque shapes. To me, they often look eerie, melancholic, even scary. The raw material for horror stories that keep children awake at night. The trolls are going to come and get you if you don’t behave!

I struggled to capture the mood of these mountains, until I started to play with the photos in black and white. Vivid colors make them too cheerful and disguise their eeriness. Here’re a couple shoots I like. They look like scenes from the Lord of the Ring.
